Dr Gustavo Palacios
Biography
Dr Gustavo Palacios is a virologist with more than 20 years of experience in the study of emerging infectious diseases. His research focuses on understanding the genetic composition of viruses, as well as their emergence and transmission. He is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and a member of the Global Health and Emerging Pathogens Institute.
Previously, Dr Palacios served as Director of Foundational Sciences at the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, where he led the development of genomic technologies to characterize virus transmission during outbreaks in Africa and South America. Earlier in his career, he worked at the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University, where he conducted pioneering research on the use of next-generation sequencing technologies for pathogen detection and discovery.
Dr Palacios is an accomplished educator and mentor and has authored more than 280 publications in leading scientific journals. He holds a master’s degree in biochemistry and a doctorate in virology from the University of Buenos Aires.
