Biography

Guy Harling is a social epidemiologist whose work focuses on how human behaviour affects health, largely using large-scale quantitative data. Most of his research is conducted in South Africa, but he has also worked in Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Guy has designed, led and analysed multiple health surveys for adolescents, often with a focus on sexual health and infectious diseases. With the multi-country Africa Research, Implementation Science, and Education (ARISE) Network he co-led the development of an adolescent health indicator framework for lower- and middle-income settings. He is especially interested in managing bias in survey data, including those arising from social desirability and non-participation.

Guy is an Associate Professor in the Institute for Global Health at University College London in the UK, a faculty member at Africa Health Research Institute in South Africa and holds honorary appointments at the University of the Witwatersrand and University of KwaZulu-Natal.
