Dr Hideki Hasegawa
Biography
Hideki Hasegawa, M.D., Ph.D. is the Director of the Center for Influenza and Respiratory Virus Research at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), the Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza in Tokyo, the Director of the Essential Regulatory Laboratory at NIID, and the Director of the National Influenza Center in Japan since 2019.
Dr. Hasegawa is a virologist and pathologist with specialty in infectious diseases. He received his MD and PhD degree from Hokkaido University in 1993 and 1997 respectively. He received postdoctoral training at the Rockefeller University and University College Dublin before he joined NIID (Tokyo, Japan).
Dr. Hasegawa’s research interests are the pathology of emerging infectious diseases and mucosal immunology of respiratory systems for respiratory virus infection and prevention.
Dr. Hasegawa and his colleague identified pathological feature of pandemic influenza virus in 2009 and H7N9 avian influenza virus and newly emerged infectious disease SFTS (Sever Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome) caused by newly emerging bunyavirus. Dr.Hasegawa also has been studying the mucosal vaccine and mucosal adjuvant development for influenza. He studied the character of secretory IgA antibody in the upper respiratory system and these knowledge leads us to understand the functional mechanism of prevention of influenza and respiratory virus infection and the influenza vaccine effectiveness.
Dr.Hasegawa has authored or co-authored more than 250 scientific publications.
