Dr Jean-Michel Heraud
Biography
Dr Heraud is a virologist with a PhD in Microbiology and Virology obtained at the University Denis Diderot (Paris). In 2016 he received from the University of University Sorbonne Paris Cité, the highest diploma of the French academic system (HDR). In 2020, he has been elevated to the rank of Knight of the National Order of Madagascar.
Dr Heraud acquired a broad experience in infectious disease and public health, obtained through his years of work at the Institut Pasteur of French Guiana, his education in France and his intensive research at the National Institutes of Health. During almost 12 years spent in Madagascar as head of the virology unit at the Institut Pasteur de Madagascar, he actively participated to the set-up of a sentinel networks aiming at collecting on a daily based, indicators related to dengue-like syndromes, Influenza-like illnesses, diarrhea, and malaria, in different regions of Madagascar.
In his recent position at the Institut Pasteur de Dakar, he has been tasked to develop research and public health programs aiming at identifying viral etiologies of infectious encephalitis and implementing integrated rabies surveillance in one region of Senegal. During his scientific career, Jean-Michel Heraud has authored and co-authored more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals, of which 21 are directly linked to arboviruses studies.
