Ms Jeane Nicolas
Biography
Jeane Nicolas is a Specialist Adviser Toxicology in food safety at New Zealand Food Safety, part of the Ministry for Primary Industries. As a European Registered Toxicologist (ERT), part of the Food Risk Assessment team, she is responsible for conducting human health risk assessments related to chemical residues, environmental contaminants, and other potential hazards present in food. Her work directly supports the development of science-based regulatory decisions and public health protection policies in New Zealand. She also plays a role in emergency response situations involving food safety, offering scientific advice to inform rapid decision-making and compliance actions.
Before working in food safety, Jeane has been working as a toxicologist in the area of chemical safety at the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) and later at the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA NZ), where she contributed to regulatory toxicology and chemical hazard evaluations.
Currently, she is a parttime PhD Research Candidate at the University of Canterbury, where she is researching the dietary exposure to microplastics in the New Zealand diet.
