John fractured his hip joint due to a fall in the bathroom and was operated on to fix the issue. Later he developed a drug-resistant infection of the surgical site and had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit since the infection had spread through his blood stream.

He had to be admitted for months in the hospital and was given strong antibiotics to clear the infection. John had to undergo several surgeries to remove the dead tissues from the wound and his kidneys almost failed during this ordeal. It took one year for his infection to clear and now he is on his path to recovery. But a strong healthy man like John now needs crutches to move around following a 3-inch shortening of the affected leg.

John Kariuki is a veterinarian by training and serves as an Assistant Director with the Ministry of Agriculture and livestock development, Kenya.
