Biography

Jorge Bermudez is a Brazilian Medical Doctor born in Honduras, MSc in Tropical Medicine and DSc in Public Health. He is currently Senior Researcher and Head of the Medicines Policy Department at the National School of Public Health, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for Pharmaceutical Policies. For many years in the past, he has been a member of the Brazilian Delegation to the yearly World Health Assemblies, responsible for discussions on access to medicines.

In 2001 he was elected Director of the National School of Public Health and in 2004 he moved to PAHO, Washington, selected as Unit Chief for Essential Medicines, Vaccines and Health Technologies, having acted throughout the Americas. From 2007 to 2011 he was Executive-Director of UNITAID, hosted by WHO in Geneva. Back to Brazil, he was Fiocruz’ Vice-President for Health Production and Innovation from 2011 to 2016.Besides his participation in international meetings, he was appointed by UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon as one of the 15-member UN Secretary-general’s High-level panel on access to medicines (2015-2016). He has published books, book chapters and relevant papers dealing with global health, public health, access to medicines and intellectual property.
