Dr Kiyosu Taniguchi

Biography

Dr Kiyosu Taniguchi was trained as a general pediatrician and later as a pediatric infectious disease specialist. After field experience conducting epidemiological studies in Ghana, he joined the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Japan (NIID) and engaged in the establishment of Infectious Disease Surveillance Center (IDSC) as well as development and operation of the national infectious disease surveillance and response program including pandemic preparedness. In 2000 he was dispatched to WHO/HQ/CDS/CSR and worked for international infectious disease surveillance and outbreak response, as well as the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) and the International Health Regulations (IHR) revision. 

After returning to NIID/IDSC, he resumed activities on infectious disease surveillance, outbreak response and preparedness for bioterrorism and pandemic influenza as well as international contribution to the IHR revision process, Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), and G7 Global Health Security Action Group. During duty period, he responded to the many local, national and global infectious disease outbreaks including SARS and the 2009 influenza pandemic. 

He is currently Director General of National Hospital Organization Mie National Hospital, Professor of Cooperative Graduate School of Medicine, Mie University and a member of the committee of infectious diseases of National Health Sciences Council.
