Laura Barcelona was born in the city of Córdoba in Argentina and has lived in Buenos Aires since 1993.
She is a doctor who graduated from the National University of Cordoba (UNC), specializing in infectious diseases. She completed her residency in infectious diseases in the city of Buenos Aires at the Francisco Javier Muñiz Hospital, a hospital specializing in infectious diseases and regional endemic pathology. Dr. Barcelona completed her postgraduate degree in infectious diseases with Dr. Daniel Stamboulián at the Center for Infectious Studies, where she has been working for 20 years.
Dr. Barcelona is the head of the Infectiology Service of the Bernardo Houssay Hospital in Vicente López, Buenos Aires and is the Coordinator of the National Coordination for the Appropriate Use of Antimicrobials under the Ministry of Health of the Nation; she also coordinates the National Commission for the Control of Antimicrobial Resistance (CoNaCRA). CoNaCRA is a technical, multidisciplinary and multisectoral non-binding committee that advises national authorities and policy makers to implement the actions of the National Plan for the Control of Antimicrobial Resistance in Argentina in order to minimize the incidence of infections associated with healthcare and maintain the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents in the treatment and prevention of microbial infections in humans and animals. This commission is a model in Latin America for the fight against bacterial resistance within the framework of One Health and was created through a bi-ministerial resolution in 2015.
CoNaCRA's mission is to verify compliance with the Argentine Strategy for the Control of Antimicrobial Resistance.
Dr. Barcelona is a member of the SADI Committee for the proper use of resources. Dr. Barcelona is a professor at the National University of Buenos Aires (UBA) at the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Medical School since 2004. She also has clinical research experience in numerous antibiotic, antiviral and vaccine studies from 2007 to date.
