Lembit Rägo
Biography
Dr Lembit Rägo is the Secretary-General of the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) since 2016. From 1983-1999 he was a Professor of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology at Tartu University, Estonia. He was the founder and first Director-General of the Estonian State Agency of Medicines, during 1991-1999. In 1999 he joined the WHO in Geneva as Coordinator of the Quality Assurance and Safety of Medicines team. In the WHO, among others, he started and built up Prequalification of Medicines Programme. In 2013 he was appointed as the Head of the newly formed big WHO unit, Regulation of Medicines and other Health Technologies, which combined all WHO’s regulatory activities for medicines, vaccines and diagnostics. Since 2000 he has served as an observer to ICH, first representing the WHO and now the CIOMS. Dr Rägo has published numerous scientific articles including on several topics related to medicines regulation.
