Professor Liam Smeeth
Biography
Liam Smeeth has been Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine since 2021. He is a professor of clinical epidemiology and a global leader in using computerised health data for research. Liam has 35 years of experience working as a medical doctor in the UK National Health Service. Previously, he was a Trustee of the British Heart Foundation and non-executive director of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. His current contributions include membership of the strategic oversight committee for UK Biobank, and he is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Additionally, he co-chairs the BMJ Commission on the Future of the NHS and played a key role in co-leading the creation of the OpenSafely resource in response to the Covid pandemic. He was awarded a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in the King’s birthday honours in 2025 for services to public health.
