Biography

Professor, Consultant Clinical Microbiologist, Infection specialist, & HOD of Pathology, Peshawar Institute of Cardiology-MTI

Nationality – Pakistan 

Dr. Maria Khan attained her medical degree from Khyber Medical College, Peshawar, Pakistan. She has completed her residency, fellowship, and postgraduate degree in Clinical Microbiology. She is actively involved in teaching undergraduate medical students, nursing, and allied health sciences and supervising postgraduate medical students and research fellows. Moreover, she has done a master’s in health Profession Education (MHPE) from Khyber Medical University. 

Currently, she is serving as Professor, Consultant Clinical Microbiologist, Infection specialist, and Head of the Department of Pathology/ Laboratory Medicine at the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology- MTI. She actively participates in hospital quality and safety services i.e., chair of the Hospital Infection Control Committee and Antimicrobial Stewardship program. Simultaneously, is involved in a wide range of educational activities, and has trained several healthcare professionals. She has developed an institutional Infection Control department and has always led the IPC committees. She has initiated several activities aimed at capacity building and quality improvement in clinical microbiology, which she contemplates as essential for combating AMR nationally and globally. 

She is also on the Editorial Board of several Medical Journals and has several publications in peer-reviewed journals.  She is a member of several national and International Professional societies. Her research interests include evidence-based strategies for the prevention and control of hospital-acquired infections, AMR, antimicrobial and diagnostic stewardship, and the One Health Surveillance approach. Her expert opinion has been sought in the development of several AMR policies, Antibiotic treatment guidelines, research agendas, multisectoral coordination, and education and training programs. She has provided expert advice to national AMR surveillance programs and has participated in several workshops, technical working groups, and advisory committees in antimicrobial stewardship and AMR. She is an IFBA-certified BRM Biosafety, Biosecurity Professional and Alumni Biosecurity Diplomacy Workshop for Young Scientists from the Global South (MX2-2021, 2nd edition), Biological Weapon Convention, UNODA, United Nations.
