Biography

Mariano Esteban, is Professor  at the National Center of Biotechnology (CNB- CSIC) in Madrid, Spain and Head of the  Poxvirus and Vaccines Group. Prof. Esteban spent 22 years abroad, United Kingdom, Belgium and USA, where he became full Professor at SUNY, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. He returned to Spain in 1992 as director of the newly created CNB recruiting excellent group leaders in biotechnology. Prof. Esteban is a well-recognized virologist with a long experience in molecular basis of pathogenesis by infectious agents and in translational research. In particular, his group has made major contributions in the biology of vaccinia virus, the mechanism of action of interferons and development of vaccines against major diseases like, HIV/Aids, hepatitis C, chikungunya, Ebola, zika, malaria and leishmaniasis, and most recently developed a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19. He has published around 400 articles in impact journals, 35 Thesis and 12 patents
