Dr Marilda Mendonça Siquiera

Biography

Marilda Mendonça Siqueira is a Titular Researcher at FIOCRUZ and Chief of the Respiratory Virus Laboratory, Chief of the National Reference Laboratory for Influenza, Measles and SARS-CoV-2 for the Brazilian Ministry of Health. She is also the Director of the WHO National Influenza Center of Brazil and the WHO Regional Reference Laboratory for Measles and COVID-19. 

Dr Siqueira is a Member of the WHO’s SARS-CoV-2 Reinfection Working Group WG, the SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Working Group and the Measles Genomics Working Group, and serves on the Scientific Steering Committee of GABRIEL Network of Fondation Mérieux France. She is also a member of the Measles Rubella Elimination Regional Monitoring and RE-verification Commission of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). 

Dr Siqueira has a broad background in virology, with specific training and expertise in respiratory and exanthematic viruses.  Her research includes the investigation of phylogenetic and epidemiological characteristics of the viruses and their associated diseases, in addition to analysis of immune responses in the host and antiviral approaches against viruses. Dr Siqueira has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and 9 book chapters. 

Dr Siqueira holds a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy and Biochemistry, a Master's degree in Parasitology from Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ), and a Doctorate in Microbiology from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dr Siqueira obtained her postdoctoral training in virology at Public Health England, London.
