Biography

Professor Mayowa Owolabi is a Professor of Neurology and Honorary Consultant Neurologist, Department of Medicine, University College Hospital, Ibadan; Professor and Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University of Ibadan; Fellow of the Academy of Sciences (Nigeria), and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He is a recognized global leader in neurorehabilitation, community-based genomic epidemiology of stroke and its risk factors in Africa with a stroke phenotyping software patent; >120 international scientific presentations; >300 publications and several inventions. He has led collaborative stroke studies including as PI for the African Rigorous Innovative Stroke Epidemiological Surveillance (ARISES) & Systematic Investigation of Blacks with Stroke using Genomics (SIBS Genomics) studies; pioneer Chair of the largest study of H3Africa cardiovascular diseases working group with (>55,000 subjects). He occupies strategic international positions including pioneer Director, Centre for Genomic and Precision Medicine, University of Ibadan; the pioneer Regional Vice-President, World Federation of Neurorehabilitation (Africa); and World Hypertension League Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Office Director among others. He is one of the top 10 Nigerian scientists among the world’s top 2% scientists (Statisense Stanford University) and a recipient of several awards including 2021 World Stroke Organization global Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Stroke Research.
