Michael Gichangi
Biography
Dr Michael Gichangi, is a Senior Deputy Director of Medical Services and also serving as the Head of Ophthalmic Services Unit at the Ministry of Health Kenya.
He studied ophthalmology at the University of Nairobi, and later public health for eye care at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He also trained as a Global Health and Leadership Fellow with the AFYA Bora Consortium in 2019. He has vast experience spanning from clinical ophthalmology and public eye health, research and policy.
He has provided national policy and strategic direction for eye health in Kenya for 18 years. He has actively taken part in shaping regional and global eye health agenda through various working groups, like in ECSA-HC Eye Health Expert Committee. He previously facilitated the development and documentation of “Core competences for eye health workforce in the WHO African Region”(Core competencies for the eye health workforce in the WHO African Region | WHO | Regional Office for Africa).
He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital,(and AMPATH)-Eldoret Kenya, and the Kenya Society for the Blind, representing the Ministry of Health in providing Governance support.
