Professor Mike Sharland
Biography
Professor Mike Sharland is the Antibiotic Policy Group Lead, Institute of Infection and Immunity, City St George’s, University of London. He is a paediatrician, working to improve antibiotic use. He has led global strategic public health focussed antibiotic clinical trials and has a long-standing interest in antibiotic policy.
He chaired for five years, the WHO EML Antibiotic Working Group (AWG), that developed and refined the AWaRe system. He worked with WHO in the development of the GPW13 target that >60% of total use at a country level should be Access antibiotics, and the 2024 UNGA-AMR global 70% Access target. He chaired the AWG through the planning, development, and publication of the 2022 WHO AWaRe antibiotic book that provides guidance on the management of 35 infections in adults and children across primary care and hospital sectors. He chaired the AWG scientific meetings that developed formal WHO recommendations for the antibiotic guidance for each infection. He is now a member of STAG-AMR.
He is the Chief Investigator of the Wellcome Trust funded ADILA project, a collaboration with Oxford University and the GLASS AMU team, producing multiple outputs informing the development and implementation of local, national and global targets of optimal antibiotic use.
