Dr Mônica da Luz Carvalho Soares
Biography
Dr Mônica da Luz Carvalho Soares is a Brazilian Health Regulatory Expert at the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA) since 2005. She has a degree in Pharmacy and a Ph.D. in Biological Science at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
Her professional journey at ANVISA began at the General Management of Medicines when she was a member of the Multidisciplinary Commission for Updating the List of Essential Medicines in Brazil. From 2012 to 2015, Mônica coordinated the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia. In 2016, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Maryland (UMBC).
Upon her return to ANVISA in 2017, she coordinated an Antimicrobial Working Group which aimed to identify the best ways to estimate antimicrobial consumption to promote rational antimicrobial use in Brazil. Between 2019 and 2021, Mônica was appointed General Manager of Knowledge, Innovation and Research and coordinated a project that culminated in a scientific publication: Consumption of antibiotics in Brazil – an analysis of sales data between 2014 and 2019.
Today, she is a director’s advisor and has coordinated activities related to improved antimicrobial resistance regulatory policies. She is also a member of the One Health Work Group of the Brazilian Ministry of Health.
