Prof Motlalepula Matsabisa
Biography
Prof Motlalepula Matsabisa is a distinguished pharmacologist and Director of the African Medicines Innovations and Technology Development. He plays a pivotal role in regulatory affairs, serving as a member and chairperson of expert committees within the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), focusing on frameworks for African Traditional Medicine and national cannabis policy. He chairs the WHO AFRO Regional Expert Committee on Traditional Medicines for COVID-19, and he is also Deputy President of the South African Society for Basic and Clinical Pharmacology. His leadership extends to the BRICS Natural Medicines Institute, which he is currently establishing. He holds patents for novel antimalarial compounds and has supervised numerous postgraduate students. His extensive research collaborations with South African communities underscore his commitment to advancing traditional and plant-based medicines globally.
