Biography

Bill Jeffery, BA, LLB, Executive Director and General Counsel for the Centre for Health Science and Law, a health advocacy organization focused on food and nutrition based in Ottawa, Canada.  

He was a member of the Canadian Minister of Health’s Trans Fat Task Force (2006-2008) and advocated implementation of a regulatory ban until one was promulgated in 2017.  From 1997 to 2003, he advocated mandating labelling of the amount of trans fat on prepackaged foods.  In 2018, he was honoured by the Speaker of the Senate with its medal in recognition of "improving the living conditions of all Canadians in a significant manner.

Since 2018, he has provided technical assistance through UNICEF on public health nutrition regulations to African governments. He was one of five voting Advisory Board members of the International Development Law Organization’s Healthy Diets and Human Rights Research and a Canadian Department of Justice advisory committee to develop a “Child Rights Impact Assessment” tool. He has advocated evidence-based nutrition/food-related reforms at the UN Codex Alimentarius Commission (since 1998), WHO (since 2005), General Assembly (since 2011), and committees of the UN Human Rights Council (since 2018), including negotiations of a Legally Binding Instrument on Business and Human Rights.
