Mr Sorie Samura is a graduate in Medical Laboratory Science and now leads the national patient referral Coordination unit at the National Emergency Medical Services (NEMS). Sorie has helped design, implement and lead interventions to enhance access to timely and quality healthcare to all in Sierra Leone. He designed and lead the National Referral Coordinator System to improve hospital preparedness and access to health services in Sierra Leone. From 2016-2017 he coordinated access to health care for Ebola survivors in Freetown, Sierra Leone. From 2017 to date, his network of Referral Coordinators have continued to support access to health services for Ebola Survivors nationwide.
During the 2014/2015 Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, Sorie worked clinically at Connaught Hospital Ebola isolation unit, where he contracted the virus whilst treating other patients but was lucky to survive. Having had the experience of being a healthcare worker treating Ebola patients and being an Ebola patient myself, has given me the opportunity to understand the clinical manifestation and sequelae after surviving the disease.
