Biography

Nirmala Sharma began her career in the social sector and has evolved into a public health leader with over 30 years of experience addressing community health challenges in Nepal. With over a decade of specialization in Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), she has been serving as Country Coordinator for FAIRMED Nepal since 2015, leading NTD and maternal and newborn health (MNH) initiatives across 11 districts.

Her work focuses on key NTDs such as Lymphatic Filariasis, Leprosy, and Kala-azar, in close coordination with the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) and the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD). She has contributed to morbidity management, stigma reduction, and the empowerment of affected individuals. Within NTDs, she focuses on reaching " the unreached" populations, formulating local strategies that have significantly boosted coverage rates and service accessibility. Her approach combines technical rigor with community-based action ensuring that proven NTD interventions are institutionalized within the national health system. Her expertise lies in integrating NTD interventions within MNH services. She holds a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) from KIT, Netherlands.
