Professor Mulunda Mwanza

Biography

Mulunda Mwanza was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo where he obtained DVM in Veterinary Medicine. He has a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (University of Johannesburg, South Africa) and certified veterinary epidemiologist (University of Colorado, USA). Passionate academic and researcher, he has interest and expertise in food safety with specialisation in food microbiology, mycotoxicology, residues, toxicology, veterinary public health and epidemiology.

Currently he is a Professor and head the Department of Animal Health in the School of Agriculture at the North-West University (South Africa). His current research focus is on fungi and mycotoxins in food with particular interest on the impact of climatic change on fungal and bacteria behaviour and possible effects on animal and human health. In addition, he is also working on biological control of toxigenic fungi in food to mitigate health risk for consumers. Fulbright scholar, he is also working on the impact of aflatoxin on the occurrence of breast cancer in collaboration with the University of Missouri (USA). He has supervised/co-supervised to completion several MSc and PhD students and published more than 80 peer reviewed scientific papers. He is also serving on the AOAC/Africa executive board.
