Biography

Nicolette Nabukeera Barungi is a paediatrician and Associate Professor of Paediatrics at Makerere University College of Health Sciences in Kampala, Uganda. She holds a Masters in Paediatrics from Makerere University, Kampala Uganda and a PhD from University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Her PhD was in the area of immune functions among children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and this has led her to do more work in the area of malnutrition in children. Most of her 37 research publications are in the area of severe acute malnutrition.  In addition, she has been a practicing Paediatrician for over 15 years at Mulago National Referral Hospital, with hands-on experience in the management of children with SAM at Mwanamugimu Nutrition Unit since 2014. This nutrition unit is a Centre of Excellence in the management of SAM, teaching and research in nutrition. She was on the core team that spear-headed the revision of the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) national guidelines of 2020 and has been training health workers on these guidelines. Being a clinician and researcher, she identifies many researchable areas in the area of SAM and has encouraged many juniors to conduct research in this area.
