Professor Nirmala Bhoo-Pathy

Nirmala Bhoo-Pathy, MD, PhD, is a public health physician at the University of Malaya Medical Centre and professor of clinical epidemiology at Universiti Malaya. Her work as a cancer systems scientist seeks to understand and reshape the systems that determine who benefits from progress in cancer care.
As a regional scientific lead of the ASEAN Costs in Oncology (ACTION) study, she studied cancer's financial, quality-of-life, and survival consequences in close to 10,000 patients across eight ASEAN countries. Her research brings together epidemiology, policy, and implementation to advance patient-centred cancer care, spanning financial protection, access, survivorship, and workforce.
Professor Bhoo-Pathy serves on three Lancet Commissions: Women, Power and Cancer; the Human Crisis in Cancer (leading the Economic Section); and Cancer and Health Systems. She is President of the Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention, a board member of the Institute of Cancer Policy at King's College London, and a steering committee member of the Global Alliance for Cancer Patient Navigation.
