Professor Peter Blain

Biography

Professor Peter Blain is Emeritus Professor of Environmental Medicine in the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University. He specialized in Acute (Emergency) Medicine at Newcastle Hospitals National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust and was Director of the Medical Toxicology Centre and National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Health Protection Research Unit at Newcastle University. He is honorary Consultant in Emergency Response Medicine to the United Kingdom Health Security Agency and Operational Medical Advisor to a Specialist Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Response Unit. He is from the United Kingdom.  

Professor Blain provides medical expertise to intelligence and security analysis. He is an expert in CBRN medicine, and medical countermeasures research and provides high-level expert advice to the governments of the United Kingdom and the United States of America in operational CBRN planning including the medical protection and treatment of individuals and populations. He advises on medical countermeasures and vaccines held in National Stockpiles, CBRN identification/diagnostic capabilities, and treatment protocols for the medical response to CBRN incidents and other emergencies. Professor Blain works with United Kingdom government departments, agencies and other specialist groups concerned with the United Kingdom counter terrorism and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNe) emergency preparedness, resilience, response and recovery. Professor Blain is a civilian expert advisor to the United Kingdom Defence Medical Services, principally involved with medical sciences research, operational medicine and CBRNe medical interventions and countermeasures.  

Professor Blain was a member of the Advisory Group that assessed the CBRNe threat to the 2012 London Olympics and developed a risk mitigation strategy and Concept of Operations for emergency responders. Recently, Professor Blain was the lead physician of the Clinical Expert Group advising on the clinical care and management of the casualties in the Salisbury Incident. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Professor Blain advised the government of the United Kingdom on detection and diagnostic technologies and potential medical countermeasures. In the conflict in Ukraine, Professor Blain advised, through the government of the United Kingdom, on CBRN protection, exposure identification and treatments.
