Prof. Harry Hausler
Biography
Harry Hausler is a family physician, HIV clinician and public health specialist with 29 years of international experience implementing and evaluating integrated TB and HIV programmes. He is the CEO of TB HIV Care, a civil society organization that delivers TB and HIV prevention, diagnosis and treatment services to general and key populations including inmates in correctional services, adolescent girls and young women, sex workers and people who use drugs in South Africa. He is the Chair of the Civil Society Forum of the Western Cape and Co-Chair of the Provincial Council on AIDS and TB, Chair of the TB Prevention Task Team of the National TB Think Tank and is a member of the Civil Society TB Task Team and TB Technical Working Group of the South African National AIDS Council and the World Health Organization Civil Society Task Force on TB.
For the past 15 years, he has a been a strong advocate for community health workers to be trained and mentored to provide a comprehensive package of integrated and holistic primary health care at household level with biosocial and structural assessments and referral to supportive services, recognizing that the hierarchies of needs are often not restricted to physical/health conditions but to creating safe and nurturing spaces that allow people to live their full potential across multiple areas in their lives and sectors.
He has led programs to reach vulnerable and key populations through employing staff from affected communities to run peer led mobile outreach services that meet people where they are in a respectful way with protection of human rights as a core principle through which to powerfully connect and nurture people.
