Biography

Professor Aris Papageorghiou is a clinician scientist and split his time equally between his academic work at the University of Oxford, and providing clinical services to the National Health Service at St George’s Hospital in London. He holds positions of Full Professor of Obstetrics and Fetal Health at both institutions. His clinical expertise is in maternal and perinatal health, maternal disease in pregnancy, fetal diagnosis and therapy and ultrasound. On the research front he runs a large academic group with an interest in maternal, fetal and perinatal health. He uses diverse methods, including clinical epidemiology, trials, data synthesis and implementation science. He runs large global projects in low resource settings using ultrasound, biomarkers and clinical methods to improve phenotyping and outcomes. One of his major research lines in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in imaging led him to found the Oxford spin-out, Intelligent Ultrasound. Committed to globally accessible education, he founded www.scan.academy during the pandemic. Professor Papageorghiou has authored over 450 original articles and an h-index of 86. He has received many honours, including a prestigious Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Athens; Honorary Fellow Award of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine; and Fellowship of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a Visiting Professor at Capital Medical University, Beijing; National Chair of the Expert Working Group in OBGYN for NHS Digital, UK. He is a server on a number of Editorial and Advisory Boards. In 2022, he was appointed as Editor-in-Chief for the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
