Professor Hosam Mamoon Zowawi

Biography

Hosam Mamoon Zowawi, Ph.D. is a clinical microbiologist and infectious diseases scientist interested in antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Dr Zowawi is interested to monitor the spread and emergence of antimicrobial resistance in the Gulf States. As a clinical microbiologist Dr Zowawi recognizes the need to develop more rapid diagnostic tools to aid rapid implementation of targeted medical management. Hence, he is also focusing on developing innovative tests to rapidly identify infectious diseases.

Dr Zowawi has advised for the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance (Review on AMR www.amr-review.org), which was commissioned by, and reporting to, the former UK Prime Minister David Cameron. He was also a member of the consultants group for the GCC Strategic Plan to Combat antimicrobial resistance, the former chairman of the National AMR Awareness Sub-committee and a member in the Saudi National Committee to Combat AMR.

Dr Zowawi is also dedicated to public engagement and believes that better science communication could publicize science, raise awareness and transform healthcare. Utilizing cinematography (e.g. The Cave documentary), and engaging directly with the public through seminars, school visits and sport events, Hosam is committed to raise the global profile of infectious disease to create an impact.

The significance of his multidisciplinary research is widely recognized and has received multiple national and international awards and recognitions. These include the Rolex Awards for Enterprise, NHMRC Peter Doherty Fellowship, Next Generation Leader by TIME Magazine, Tall Poppy Science Award, Queensland Science and Innovation Champion, and the junior researcher award by King Abdullah International Medical Research Center.
