Professor John Russell Stothard
Biography
John Russell Stothard is Professor of Medical Parasitology at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) since 2011 and has been working on the epidemiology and control of several neglected tropical disease and malaria. With several international colleagues, he has received large-scale research funding support from the UK-Department for International Development, Wellcome Trust, and the National Institute for Health and Care Research. This funding has supported programmes that address important health issues in tropical regions of the world, advancing pragmatic solutions for control of schistosomiasis, for example, from infants through to adults with chronic disease. These large-scale multidisciplinary projects benefit from long term connections and collaborations with many African collaborators in Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, amongst others. A unifying theme is adopting One Health approaches to investigate aquatic ecosystem health and sustainable management within its broadest sense. This includes animal parasitology with a growing interest in the health and conservation of various non-human primates.
