Biography

Martin Hensher is the Henry Baldwin Professorial Research Fellow in Health Systems Sustainability at Menzies Institute for Medical Research at the University of Tasmania in Australia. Professor Hensher’s areas of expertise include health economics, ecological economics, climate change mitigation and adaptation for healthcare systems, the future of healthcare in a post-growth economy, and overconsumption and diminishing marginal returns in healthcare. Professor Hensher has a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, a Master’s degree in Health Planning and Financing, and a PhD in Economics. Professor Hensher has previously worked as a health economist for the London Health Economics Consortium at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine; was the European Union Consultant in Health Economics based in the South African National Department of Health; and was Senior Economic Adviser in the Department of Health England. Professor Hensher also spent seven years as a Director in the Tasmanian Department of Health. Professor Hensher is currently Chair of Working Group 4 (Health System Transformation) of the Lancet Commission on Sustainable Healthcare.
