Professor Motoyuki Sugai
Biography
Professor Motoyuki Sugai is the Director of Antimicrobial Resistance Research Center (AMR-RC) in NIID. He received Ph.D degree of Microbiology in 1987 and served as the professor of Bacteriology for 18 years in Hiroshima University. He is now conducting national surveillance for antimicrobial resistant pathogens in Japan. He is in charge running AMR pathogen surveillance of infections cases (NESID), Japan National Nosocomial Surveillance (JANIS), Tricycle surveillance in Japan and established Antimicrobial Resistant Bacterial bank in AMR-RC, NIID in 2019. He is a member of several Official Meetings of Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan and also a member of Risk Assessment Working Group for Antimicrobial Resistance, Food Safety Commission of Japan, the Cabinet Office. He was the Roster of Experts Joint FAO/WHO Expert Meeting on Foodborne Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), and is a member of Advisory Group on Critically Important Antimicrobials (WHO) starting from this November. AMR-RC, NIID was nominated as WHO Collaborating Center for AMR Surveillance and Research in 2021 (Head: Motoyuki Sugai).
