Professor Rafael Laniado-Laborin

Biography

Dr Laniado-Laborin is a Mexican pulmonologist and epidemiologist with a professional career as a Professor of Pulmonology in the School of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Baja California for 40 years and as a pulmonologist at the Tijuana General Hospital, with over 40 years of experience in diagnosing and treating tuberculosis, serving as chief of the tuberculosis clinic and tuberculosis laboratory. He currently acts as clinical leader of the National Committee for the Control of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis for the Mexican National TB Program. He has participated in the World Health Organization Guideline Development Group for drug-resistant TB (editions 2018, 2019, and 2020). Dr Laniado-Laborin has been a member of the WHO Regional Green Light Committee (rGLC) of the Americas for Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis since 2013 and has served as president of the rGLC for the period 2016-2018 and 2022-2025. As a member of the rGLC he has participated in monitoring and training activities in most of Central and South American countries for the past 10 years. He is a member of Mexico´s CONAHCYT Mexican National System of Researchers (2007-current) with an extensive record of publications on tuberculosis, and his scientific papers have over 4,200 citations. He has published 5 books on tuberculosis (2012, 2015, 2018, 2020, and 2022).
