Professor Roman Woelfel

Biography

Professor Roman Woelfel is the director of the Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology. He is from Germany and a consulting microbiologist, virologist and infectious disease epidemiologist. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Technical University of Munich. 

As a medical officer in the Bundeswehr, Professor Wölfel has many years of experience in the field of operational cooperation between civilian and military health facilities and security agencies. Due to previous deployments, he gained personal expertise in many technical disciplines, including planning and operational experience in Biosafety & Biosecurity, Outbreak Management and Biothreat Response. 

For the past twenty years, his medical science work has focused on the diagnosis and bioforensics of hazardous pathogens and biotoxins. In this context, Professor Wölfel oversees numerous projects to improve biosecurity in Europe, Africa and Asia. As an expert military advisor, he supports Germany's participation in international organizations, e.g., in the further development of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) and in the investigation of infectious outbreaks worldwide. 

Professor Wölfel's involvement in the field of military medicine is based on a mix of operational and academic activities involving both the military and civilian health sectors. His interests include infectious diseases, tropical medicine, emergency medicine and modern training and teaching methods.
