Sangeetha Sharma
Biography
Dr Sangeeta Sharma is a senior pharmacologist and health systems strategist with over 28 years of leadership in antimicrobial stewardship, rational medicine use, and patient safety. As Professor and Head of Neuropsychopharmacology at IHBAS, Delhi, and Honorary President of Delhi Society for Promotion of Rational Use of Drugs (DSPRUD), she has championed evidence-based policy and capacity-building across clinical and administrative domains. Her work spans national guideline development, integrated antimicrobial stewardship, diagnostic stewardship, and quality assurance, with over 300 workshops conducted for clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and policymakers. She spearheaded the development and rollout of the State Action Plan to Combat AMR Delhi (SAP-CARD) and supported subnational and regional AMR strategies.
Since 2020, she has led mass public education campaigns engaging school and college teachers, students, and local communities—creatively adapting traditional Indian games to deliver AMR messages in accessible, culturally resonant formats. Her multisectoral approach brings together pharmaceutical industry leaders, media professionals, and civil society to foster shared accountability and behavioral change.
Dr. Sharma is the architect behind India’s pioneering Standard Treatment Guidelines (STGs), first published in 2002 and now in its 7th edition. These comprehensive, context-sensitive guidelines—covering over 350 conditions—have been adopted by multiple Indian states and are informing primary care practices across the Southeast Asia region through WHO-supported collaborations. She has advised WHO’s Expert Committee on Essential Medicines, Delhi and other Indian States. She has authored 20 books and 82 peer-reviewed articles. Dr. Sharma’s ability to simplify complex concepts and mobilize diverse stakeholders continues to shape national and global efforts to combat AMR through systemic, people-centered solutions.
