Professor Mike Sharland is a leading global expert in optimal antibiotic use and policy. He is an advisor to the WHO on optimal antibiotic use including as a member of the Expert Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines.

Mike was the Chair of the Antibiotic Working Group of the EML which developed the Access/Watch/Reserve (AWaRe) system for antibiotics and the WHO AWaRe Book. He leads the Wellcome Trust funded ADILA project developing novel risk adjusted models of optimal AWaRe antibiotic use.

Mike Chaired the Department of Health’s Scientific Expert Advisory Committee on AMR from 2011 to 2018. He leads an academic group at St George's University London focussing on global antibiotic policy. Mike has also been the Chief Investigator on multiple clinical trials on the prevention and optimal treatment of severe bacterial infections in neonates and children.
