Professor Tony Capon

Biography

Professor Tony Capon directs the Monash Sustainable Development Institute of Monash University and was the inaugural professor of planetary health at the University of Sydney. Professor Capon’s research focuses on urbanisation, sustainable development and human health. Previously, he directed the Global Health Institute at United Nations University (UNU- I IGH) and held professional appointments at Australian National University and the University of Sydney. From 1991 to 2006, he was the foundation director of public health and medical officer of health in western Sydney. Since 2008, Professor Capon has been advising the International Council for Science on the development of their global interdisciplinary program on health and wellbeing in the changing urban environment using systems approaches. He has won NHMRC and WHO fellowships and received more than AUD10m in research funding from NHMRC, ARC, CSIRO, Rockefeller Foundation, British Council and the Wellcome Trust. He is a member of the Rockefeller Foundation-Lancet Commission on Planetary Health and the advisory committee for the Planetary Health Alliance and the Editorial Advisory Board for The Lancet Planetary Health. Professor Tony Capon will provide technical inputs on Climate Change and Health (CC&H) evidence including health co- benefits. He will bring the context of CC&H discussion into the planetary health perspective.
