Prof William Sewell

Immunopathologist in St Vincent’s Hospital

Biography

A/Prof William (Bill) Sewell is an immunopathologist in St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, Australia, where his responsibilities cover a wide range of testing for conditions including autoimmunity, immunodeficiency and allergy. He has a special interest in clinical flow cytometry, including its role in immunophenotyping of haematological malignancies. He has a commitment to education, and has served as Chief Examiner in Immunopathology for the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. In 2018, he was able to take a five month sabbatical to work in WHO Geneva on the Essential Diagnostics List, in the time leading up to the release of the Second Edition of the EDL. During this sabbatical, he was able to apply his wide experience in clinical pathology to the EDL. In addition to his work as an immunopathologist, he holds appointments to the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the University of New South Wales. He has published widely on basic immunology and allergy, with a particular interest in cell surface molecules.
