Dr Xiao-Nong Zhou
Biography
Dr Xiao-Nong Zhou is a distinguished expert in global health, having honed his proficiency in ecology, population biology, and epidemiology after his doctoral studies at the University of Copenhagen, where he earned his PhD in 1994. Currently, he is the Chief Scientist of Parasitic Disease Control at the Chinese Center for Disease Control, and the Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Tropical Diseases. He also serves as the Vice Dean for the School of Global Health, Chinese Center for Tropical Diseases, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and is the Director of the One Health Center cosponsored by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Edinburgh.
Dr Zhou's expertise in One Health has allowed him to lead several multi-country projects, leading to significant impact on the control of schistosomiasis and other zoonotic diseases. His contributions to One Health have significantly influenced the control of major parasitic diseases across China and Southeast Asia, characterized by the establishment of surveillance-response systems and the implementation of integrated control strategies through multi-sectoral cooperation. As the Editor-in-Chief of “Infectious Diseases of Poverty” and “Science in One Health”, Dr. Zhou's influence notably shapes academic conversations surrounding One Health.
Moreover, his extensive leadership experience, ranging from the Deputy Director to the Director at the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, China CDC, from 1999 to 2023, exemplifies his dedication and commitment to advancing the knowledge and elimination of parasitic diseases.
