Key facts

  • The WHO Academy will collaborate with WHO regional and country offices to identify skill development needs, customize training materials, and strengthen the capacities of national health training institutions for continuous professional development.  
  • The Academy will form partnerships with Member States to tackle priority challenges in health workforce competencies, working closely with national health authorities and public health institutes to create tailored learning programmes.  

Overview

The rapid pace of scientific discovery and technological advancement requires the health workforce to keep pace with the latest evidence-based guidelines and be able to confidently apply them in practice.   

In an effort to address this challenge through a country-driven approach, the WHO Academy will collaborate with WHO regional and country offices. Together, they will identify skill development needs, contextualize training materials and strengthen national health training institutions to provide continuous professional development.   

WHO regional offices also play a crucial role in in guiding the Academy to ensure synergy in content and delivery with their existing training offerings for health workforce development. The Academy aims to support them by providing tools, methodologies, and collaborative design opportunities to support regional learning capabilities and ensure consistency with WHO global learning approaches.   

In coordination with regional and country offices, the Academy will establish specific partnerships with Member States to address priority challenges in health workforce competencies. This involves a close collaboration with national health authorities and public health institutes to develop bespoke learning programmes, aligning with the WHO Academy’s overall priorities and capacities.  

With partner countries the Academy will co-design new continuous professional development programmes for key groups within the health workforce like nurses and midwives. The WHO Academy will also assist Member States in their efforts to innovate health workforce organizations. Additionnally, the Academy will contextualize training modules on priority areas such as physical and mental health, health systems strengthening, and transversal priorities such as climate change, One Health, and healthy cities.   

 

Achieving the health-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals

By incorporating social determinants of health into its curriculum, the Academy helps Member States address the root causes of ill health across various sectors and foster a multi-sectoral approach to health promotion.  

Through incorporating digital innovations in lifelong learning, the WHO Academy aims to support countries in accelerating progress towards the health-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals.
