The Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) was adopted in 2015 by all countries through decisions in the World Health Assembly, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Governing Conference and the World Assembly of World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Delegates. Countries agreed to have a national action plan on AMR that is consistent with the Global Action Plan, and to implement relevant policies and plans to prevent, control and monitor AMR. To monitor country progress in the implementation of the national actions plans, an annual Tripartite AMR country self-assessment survey (TrACSS) has been jointly administered by FAO, OIE and WHO since 2016.
The results of the previous four rounds of country self-assessment surveys (2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20) are available below.

Two new stems/substems were selected, 5 suffixes were promoted to the pre-stem list and it was decided to review the descriptions of 5 stems/pre-stems.
A new scheme for Monoclonal Antibody (mAbs) Nomenclature has been accepted by INN Expert Group.
mAbs have been divide into four groups, with suffixes as follows:
• Group 1 comprises mAbs that are mono-specific and unmodified. Previously it was proposed that they would retain the -mab stem; however, given that other types of mAbs would have novel suffixes, it was felt best to drop the -mab stem altogether to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding. An alternative suffix -tug or -cab for mono-specific and unmodified mAbs was proposed.
• Group 2 comprises mono-specific, full length mAbs that have an engineered constant domain, and would be named with a -bart suffix, for ‘antibody artificial’.
• Group 3 comprises bi- or multi-specific mAbs, regardless of their format, type or shape, and the suffix -mig, for multispecific-immunoglobulin was proposed, as before.
• Group 4 comprises mAbs that are monospecific fragments of any kind, and that are derived from an immunoglobulin variable domain, and the suffix -ment for fragment was proposed.
The Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (GACVS) was established in 1999 by WHO to respond promptly, efficiently, independently (of WHO), and with scientific rigor to vaccine safety issues of potential global importance. The Committee meets twice a year on a regular basis.

The WHO Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Hub plays a key role in coordinating the Global IPC Network (GIPCN), which connects IPC organizations and WHO collaborating centers worldwide. The primary goal of this coordination is to strengthen national and international collaborations, supporting efforts to enhance IPC systems, improve outbreak preparedness and response, and build capacity for surveillance.
The focus of this meeting was to give GIPCN members and WHO IPC teams the opportunity to present updates and discuss proposed themes for World Hand Hygiene Day (WHHD) 2025.

The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunization was established by the Director-General of the World Health Organization in 1999 to advise WHO on overall global vaccination policies and strategies, ranging from vaccines and technology, research and development, to delivery of vaccination and its linkages with other health interventions. SAGE’s remit extends to the control of all vaccine-preventable diseases. An evaluation of SAGE’s scope and objectives, working mechanisms and processes in terms of their relevance, effectiveness and quality was conducted to assess whether SAGE was fit for purpose in view of the evolving immunization and global health agenda.
WHO, in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust, is hosting the Health Pavilion\r\nat the COP27 UN Climate Conference. The Health Pavilion programme will run\r\nfor the full two weeks and will convene the global health community and its\r\npartners to encourage further action on climate and health.
Individual country reports have been generated based on country responses to the 2021 Tripartite AMR Country Self-Assessment Survey (TrACSS), which was the fifth round of this annual survey. These reports focus on the country’s TrACSS responses to human health indicators, provides a 5-year overview of country TrACSS answers, and benchmarks country responses against regional and global levels on eight key AMR indicators. The Health Resources and Services Availability Monitoring System (HeRAMS) aims to provide decision-makers and health stakeholders at large with vital and up-to-date information on the availability of essential health resources and services, help them identify gaps, and determine priorities for intervention.
HeRAMS has been deployed in Gaza, the occupied Palestinian territory, since February 2024. This snapshot offers a high-level overview of the operational status of hospitals across Gaza, detailing the availability of health services and barriers to their provision, based on data reported up to May 31st, 2024. While this HeRAMS deployment is ongoing and data verification and validation continue, the analysis presented here is preliminary and intended solely to inform operations.

WHO is committed to supporting Member States through the provision of economically viable alternatives for tobacco workers, growers and (where appropriate) individual sellers, as well as protecting the environment and the health of persons in relation to the environment in respect of tobacco cultivation. The lack of information on tobacco growing and tobacco trade has often been a concern for policymakers and advocates looking to advance supply-side country tobacco control policies that are compliant with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The Country Profiles seek to provide an overview of trends in global cigarette and tobacco production and trade to address this information gap.

The Zika virus epidemic in Latin America has elicited official recommendations for\r\nwomen to delay or avoid pregnancy in affected countries, which may lead to\r\nincrease demand for family planning services for spacing and limiting. It is likely,\r\nhowever, that health facilities in affected areas where the population is most\r\nvulnerable to the disease lacks the capacity to respond to the increased demand\r\nfor family planning services. Our objectives are to perform facilities assessment\r\nand understand client perceptions in areas affected by Zika virus, and to track\r\nchanges in these parameters over time.\r\n
In collaboration with local health authorities we plan to map facilities that have the\r\ncapacity to provide services in contraception and safe abortion, including induced\r\nabortion to the full extent of the law and post-abortion care for treatment of\r\ncomplications from unsafe abortion and post-abortion contraception.\r\nFacilities availability and readiness to provide contraception and safe abortion care\r\nservices will be assessed. Focus group interviews with clients will be conducted to\r\ngain an understanding of the community’s knowledge, needs and perceived\r\nbarriers to SRH services.\r\n
This study will help us identify status of facilities regarding its preparation to\r\nrespond to the Zika virus epidemic, and those which health systems strengthening\r\nis needed. It will also help identify general gaps in services provided and barriers\r\nthat women, men, and adolescents must overcome to get the care that they need.\r\nLessons learned from this study will help to build health systems that are more\r\nprepared to consistently provide reproductive healthcare services in the context of\r\nemergencies.

The Greater Horn of Africa (GHoA) region faces severe challenges at the start of 2024, with an estimated 50.1 million people experiencing food insecurity crises. Of particular concern are 11.4 million children under five years old expected to suffer from acute malnutrition, with 2.9 million severely malnourished by June 2024. Disease outbreaks including cholera, measles, malaria, dengue fever, and others are rampant, exacerbated by factors like conflict, drought, flooding, displacement, and limited access to healthcare. Flood-affected areas in Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya have seen a surge in water and vector-borne diseases.
The region has over 24.1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, and asylum seekers, with Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, and South Sudan reporting the highest numbers. Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia are among the most food-insecure regions globally due to ongoing conflicts, flooding, and drought, leading to displacement, health facility damage, food price inflation, and increased malnutrition. These conditions hinder response efforts to disease outbreaks like cholera and measles, resulting in higher rates of illness and death.

The Health and Energy Platform of Action’s\r\n(HEPA) vision is to improve the poorest\r\npopulations’ health and livelihoods through\r\nthe adoption of clean and sustainable energy.
HEPA is a multi-stakeholder platform convened by the World Health Organization\r\n(WHO), along with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the\r\nUnited Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), the World Bank, and in cooperation with the International Renewable Energy Agency\r\n(IRENA). HEPA is a voluntary network consisting of governments, international,\r\nnon-governmental and civil society organizations, international business\r\nassociations, philanthropic foundations, and academic institutions working together\r\nto ensure universal access to clean and sustainable energy to protect health.
HEPA aims to mobilize political and financial commitments and to enhance\r\ncooperation between the health and energy sectors so that actions on achieving\r\nSDG 3 on health, SDG 7 on energy and other sustainable development
and climate action goals can be accelerated. HEPA will initially tackle health\r\nissues related to clean cooking and electrification of health-care facilities.

Globally, influenza and SARS-CoV-2 activity remained low in week 44. Influenza predominated all areas with positivity around 10% in the northern hemisphere temperate and subtropical areas, and over 10% in the tropical areas and southern hemisphere temperate and subtropical areas.
Influenza
Globally, influenza activity remained low, with influenza A viruses continuing to predominate.
In the northern hemisphere, influenza activity remained low in most countries. Influenza percent positivity was elevated in a few countries in Central America and the Caribbean, Northern Africa, Northern Europe, Southern and Eastern Asia, and was over 30% in Western, Eastern and Middle Africa, Western and South-East Asia. Small increases in activity were observed in countries in Central America and the Caribbean, Western and Middle Africa, Europe and Asia.
In the southern hemisphere, influenza activity remained low and stable in most countries with elevated positivity (>10%) in a single country in Temperate South America and two countries in Eastern Africa and percent positivity over 30% in a single country in South-East Asia. Small increases in activity were observed in single countries in Temperate South America, Middle and Eastern Africa.
In the zones with elevated positivity, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 predominated in Central America and the Caribbean, Northern and Middle Africa whereas influenza A(H3N2) was predominant in Temperate South America, Western Africa, Northern Europe, Western, Southern and South-East Asia. Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and influenza A(H3N2) were codominant in Eastern Africa.
SARS-CoV-2
Globally, SARS-CoV-2 positivity increased but remained at low levels, with some countries reporting elevated positivity (>10%) in Tropical and Temperate South America, South West and Eastern Europe, and Eastern Asia. Percent positivity was over 30% in one country in South West Europe and Western Asia. Increase in activity was reported in single countries in South-West Europe and Western Asia.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
RSV percent positivity remained elevated in Central America and the Caribbean with two countries reporting positivity over 30%, and single countries in Western and Eastern Africa and Eastern Asia. Compared to the previous reporting period, RSV positivity remained stable across most countries, with increases in activity in a few countries in Central America and the Caribbean and one country in South West Europe. RSV and influenza activity were both elevated in one country Central America and the Caribbean and one country in Western Africa.
WHO encourages countries, especially those that have received the multiplex influenza and SARS-CoV-2 reagent kits from GISRS, to conduct integrated surveillance of influenza and SARS-CoV-2 and report epidemiological and laboratory information in a timely manner to established regional and global platforms.
