Over 90 million adults have diabetes in the South-East Asia region. In Bangladesh, diabetes is a public health issue of national concern, with almost one in ten adults suffering from the condition.
If left untreated, diabetes can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves, raising the risk of heart attack and stroke at an early age and premature death.
The good news is that a large proportion of diabetes cases can be prevented by maintaining a normal body weight, engaging in regular physical activity and eating a healthy diet.
This World Health Day we encourage everyone to make healthy choices every day to keep diabetes at bay.
