Roadmap for Health and Well-being in the Western Balkans (‎2021-2025)‎: European Programme of Work (‎2020–2025)‎ - United Action for Better Health

Overview

In 2021 the Roadmap for Health and Well-being in the Western Balkans 2021–2025 was endorsed as a galvanizer and catalyst to keep health high on the political agenda in the Western Balkans. It fosters cooperation among countries and provides a stimulus for increased investment in health.

The Roadmap offers an innovative, strategic and customized framework that promotes country-level health goals and priorities, and that targets investment in critical areas of health systems across this subregion. It includes 10 high-impact action areas and 17 reform initiatives that were developed through extensive consultation with countries of the Western Balkans and partners. The action areas seek to:

  • increase resilience to health emergencies
  • ensure financial protection and access to medicines
  • strengthen primary health care through digital transformation
  • safeguard quality of health care and patient safety
  • promote mental health and social care services
  • support the health workforce
  • combat avoidable noncommunicable diseases
  • create healthy and green environments
  • extend vaccine benefits across the life course
  • combat antimicrobial resistance.
  • Located at the heart of south-eastern Europe, the Western Balkans include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo*.

WHO/Europe and the Western Balkans implement the Roadmap together through, for example, close collaboration between WHO/Europe and 3 main subregional organizations:

  • the Central European Initiative (CEI)
  • the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC)
  • the South-Eastern Europe Health Network (SEEHN).
  • Yearly progress reports are published to give an overview on the implementation of the Roadmap.
