"Free Hadi 90" is a Swahili phrase for a choice to prefer lead-free paints or else those that have at most 90ppm. We are glad that Kenya has gazetted regulations for lead-free paints but still worry over the challenge of illicit and counterfeit paints crossing into our borders. In our campaign we will be guiding consumers, building contractors, homeowners and retailers on how to distinguish lead-free paints. This will be achieved through a series of webinars, face-to-face meetings, physical tours of construction sites and paint outlets and social media sensitization. Lastly, we hope to speak to customs officials at the Kilindini and Old Ports on ways of enhancing surveillance against leaded paints.

Brief description of event
Why are one third of children globally poisoned by lead? How do we evaluate interventions to reduce lead poisoning? While lead paint has been a major exposure source, today, the primary sources of lead poisoning of children in low- and
middle-income countries include unsafe recycling of lead-acid batteries, contaminated spices, and lead-glazed pottery. This event, co-hosted by NYU School of Global Public Health and Pure Earth, will present the latest data on the scale
and sources of global lead poisoning, as well as the solutions being developed to mitigate this crisis in the most impacted countries, including India and Mexico.

Community Pediatricians partner with Montgomery Gibbs Environmental Coalition re leaded pollution around the Montgomery Gibbs Executive Airpor via AV-GAS (leaded aviation gas)
Is this event open to public?
Yes
Brief description of event
We are presenting at the Clairemont Town Council with the Montgomery Gibbs Environmental Coalition on advocacy presentation to pressure local government to offer unleaded
aviation gas along with leaded aviation gas at this airport. We are submitted a simultaneous op-ed to the San Diego Union Tribune. While many sources of lead have since been regulated, one remains nearly unchecked: leaded aviation gasoline
(avgas), which accounts for approximately half of all lead emissions into the air. Three studies have since linked elevated blood lead levels (BLL) to children in the vicinity of airports. In our own community of San Diego, sits Montgomery-Gibbs
Executive Airport (MYF), which, at 11th place, produces 1171 pounds of toxic lead emissions annually: more than 1.5 times the amount of lead emitted from the Reid-Hillview Airport.10 Within 1 mile of MYF, there are 5 schools (Grace Christian
Elementary School and High School, Ellwood P Cubberley Elementary School, William H Taft Junior High School, Harry Wegeforth Elm School, and Will Angier Elementary School) and more than 900 residents under 5 years old, not including those
that commute to these schools and the surrounding parks daily. In addition to the imminent health threat, the lead pollution of MYF is a clear case of environmental injustice; of the 10,545 people in a mile radius of the airport, over
55% belong to racial and ethnic minority groups and over 29% are considered low income.

Promoting regulatory actions by Government to phase out lead in paint
Is this event open to public?
Yes
Brief description of event
Zambia does not have legally binding control on lead paint. The Government through the Zambia Bureau of Standards has developed and gazetted paint standards of 90 ppm for the manufacturers to voluntarily use them. CEHF /IPEN lead paint study revealed high levels of added lead added to paint. There is evidence that lead paint is a significant source of exposure especially to children and strong evidence to have the law enacted. The paint industry in Zambia through the Zambia Bureau of Standards technical committee pledged to work towards producing paint that can have unleaded and safe for public use
