Brief description of event
Lead poisoning is likely harming Angola's population and economy. A new study has identified that lead paint may be an important source of this poisoning. Eliminating lead paint is possible with a proven policy solution and supports the Goals of Sustainable Development (SDG). The National Institute of Environmental Management (INGA), a body supervised by the Government's Ministry of the Environment of Angola, proposes holding a workshop with various interested parties during the Week International Lead Poisoning Prevention 2023. The workshop has two objectives. In First, develop a collaborative roadmap to reduce lead in paint in Angola. In secondly, to raise awareness of the presence of lead paint in Angola through discussion of results of a study on paints carried out by INGA, EcoAngola (NGO) and Lead Exposure Elimination Project (LEEP, iONG) between February and May 2023.

This workshop is to test and evaluate the rainwater tanks for drinking water of the exposed Lue community of the approved Bowden's Lead, Zinc silver mine. NSW Government has approved the proposed Bowden'1.5km open cut lead mine to contaminate with total toxic dust deposits of Lead and Zinc and other heavy metals up to 4gm/sqm/month. To prove to NSW Government and Australian Federal Government this open cut Lead Zinc silver mine should not have been approved in our pristine greenfield environment. Lead dust is threatening families, wildlife, environment including Lawson Creek, the Cudgegong River and our beautiful harvested drinking water that is so precious.

Brief description of eventBetween May and June 2023, around forty paintings were purchased through the markets of Cameroon, these paintings were then sent for analysis in approved laboratories. The results of this study are still very worrying, despite the fact that Cameroon adopted regulations in 2017 prohibiting the manufacture, importation and marketing of paints with a lead content of more than 90ppm. Several paints analyzed showed quantities of lead of up to 90,000ppm; in addition more than 30 percent of paints still marketed in the country are lead paints, that is to say have lead levels greater than 90ppm.

Lead exposure is a worldwide health risk despite substantial declines in blood lead levels following the leaded gasoline phase-out. For the first time, to our knowledge, we aimed to estimate the global burden and cost of intelligence quotient (IQ) loss and cardiovascular disease mortality from lead exposure. We have the opportunity to host one of the experts researchers, Dr. Ana Navas-Acien, medical epidemiologist, specialist in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Professor of Epidemiology and Vice Chair of Research of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University, who will share with us these recent findings.

LHAP has used different means during its campaign since 2012 from awareness raising to the public at large, through developing a draft national policy, produce a draft national legislation to ban lead in paint , working with the scientific research institutes and even lobbying on the decision makers. What makes a difference is the decision makers and therefore the work will concentrated on the Ministry of Environment to coordinate and collaborate with the Ministry of Health. Therefore, LHAP will work closely with the Ministry of Environment (SAICM) focal point and strongly encourage them to contact the Ministry of Health to join forces and thus agree in coming up with a national legislation to ban the use of lead in paint. The activities will be in a form of bilateral meetings, national consultations that bring together the two ministries to facilitate cooperation and reaching a national legislation. Media and social media will be heavily used to inform the public at large about the issue and inform them about the consequences in the absence of not having a national Jordanian legislation to protect the highly susceptible members of the community and on the environment that accommodates all of us.

Sustainable development Policy Institute Pakistan has been working on chemicals and it effects on human health like mercury and Lead. A large study on lead containing paints is a flagship report done few years ago. Lead is harmful to human health and effects body from head to toe leading to physical as well as intellectual disability. Lead can be transferred through placenta and effect fetus resulting in long term effects. Lead can lead to irreversible damage to the developing brain that can result in long term health effects such as reduced intellectual ability. Children are particularly vulnerable and even relatively low level of exposure can cause irreversible neurological damage. This year SDPI will participate by raising public awareness , bringing policy maker and implementer attention towards issue of lead poisoning particularly children which can have long term effects. this awareness will be enhanced by use of print media ,social media and electronic media in the form of tweets and podcast. On the other hand it is important to raise awareness of health professionals to identify effects of lead poisoning particularly in children and pregnant mothers . this will be capacity building activity and recently published guidelines for clinical management of lead poisoning will be used as resource.

The event will include an online symposium and a online talk. Both activities will be co-organized by the Poison control center and the Center for training and education of Bach Mai hospital (hopefully funded by the World Health Organization). The symposium will be participated by physicians from the poison center and Institute for Occupational and environmental health (as speakers), specialists from the Center for Pediatric diseases, Center for Psychologic diseases, Center for neurologic diseases and Center for hematologic diseases, physicians from many different hospitals of Vietnam (mostly from provincial hospitals in the North and Centre of Vietnam), representatives from Ministry of Health, media. The symposium will be operated via Zoom platform. The online talk is for the public and operated via social media with a presentation by a physician from the poison center and he will answer questions from the audience. The media can have certain news and articles about the issue of lead poisoning.

We will contact with participants and audience via common social networks in Vietnam as well as with local WHO representative.
