Workshop on lead in paints in Angola.
Start date
24 Oct 2023
End date

Brief description of event
Lead poisoning is likely harming Angola's population and economy. A new study has identified that lead paint may be an important source of this poisoning. Eliminating lead paint is possible with a proven policy solution and supports the Goals of Sustainable Development (SDG). The National Institute of Environmental Management (INGA), a body supervised by the Government's Ministry of the Environment of Angola, proposes holding a workshop with various interested parties during the Week International Lead Poisoning Prevention 2023. The workshop has two objectives. In First, develop a collaborative roadmap to reduce lead in paint in Angola. In secondly, to raise awareness of the presence of lead paint in Angola through discussion of results of a study on paints carried out by INGA, EcoAngola (NGO) and Lead Exposure Elimination Project (LEEP, iONG) between February and May 2023.

Lobby on Policy Makers to Reach a National Legislation

Brief description of event
LHAP has used different means during its campaign since 2012 from awareness raising to the public at large, through developing a draft national policy, produce a draft national legislation to ban lead in paint , working with the scientific research institutes and even lobbying on the decision makers. What makes a difference is the decision makers and therefore the work will concentrated on the Ministry of Environment to coordinate and collaborate with the Ministry of Health. Therefore, LHAP will work closely with the Ministry of Environment (SAICM) focal point and strongly encourage them to contact the Ministry of Health to join forces and thus agree in coming up with a national legislation to ban the use of lead in paint. The activities will be in a form of bilateral meetings, national consultations that bring together the two ministries to facilitate cooperation and reaching a national legislation. Media and social media will be heavily used to inform the public at large about the issue and inform them about the consequences in the absence of not having a national Jordanian legislation to protect the highly susceptible members of the community and on the environment that accommodates all of us.

Brief description of event
The International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (ILPPW), an initiative of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint (Lead Paint Alliance) jointly led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), is an annual event that aims to advance the campaign on global action against the lead-poisoning crises, and push forward the State policies on proscribing the use of lead and lead compounds used in architectural, decorative, household, and industrial paints. This year, the ILPWW campaign, entitled "End Childhood Lead Poisoning", will focus on reminding the government, civil society organizations, health partners, industries and others of the unacceptable risks of lead exposure and the need for action to protect children's health. Specifically, it aims to raise awareness about health effects of lead exposure, highlight efforts by countries and partners to prevent childhood lead exposure, and accelerate efforts to phase out the use of lead in paint.
