Title of event
Workshop on Source Identification Linked to MICS 2024 -2025 and Broader Perspectives

Start date
05.11.2024

End date
06.11.2024

Brief description of event
Rapid urbanization and industrialization in Bangladesh have led to upsurge of heavy metal contaminants in the environment - atmosphere, land, and water bodies. Heavy metals in the environment where children live exposes them through the air they breathe, the water they drink, the soil they walk and crawl on, the food they eat and the toys they play with. Some studies have confirmed lead in turmeric, toys, paints, aluminium and ceramic cookware and some food items in Bangladesh. While the extent of heavy metal poising in women and children is not fully understood, it is estimated to be widespread with devastating impacts in Bangladesh. Two studies conducted by UNICEF, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) and the International Center for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Bangladesh (icddr,b), found lead in the blood of 100 percent of children tested – a total of 980 children in four districts and 500 children in Dhaka city. About 40 to 80 percent of the children had very high blood lead levels above 5ug/dl, which is the WHO cut-off value that requires an intervention. A global study estimates that a staggering 35 million children in Bangladesh have high levels of lead in their blood with devastating consequences especially among the poor and undernourished. Lead is toxic and damages the brain of babies and children under the age of five years, causing lifelong neurological, cognitive, and physical impairment. To accurately measure the prevalence of heavy metals in blood, UNICEF has partnered with the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) to include the Blood Lead Levels module in the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS). The MICS will collect data on lead and three heavy metals – arsenic, cadmium and mercury levels in blood of 9,000 children and 4,000 pregnant women including micronutrients and anaemia.

GAHP's Mercosur project aims to mitigate lead pollution by addressing the informal management of used lead-acid batteries (ULABs), aligning with GAHP's mission to reduce health risks caused by toxic pollution. While the Basel Convention regulates hazardous waste management, the LAC region's ban on transboundary movements has overlooked opportunities for circular economic solutions within the region. Some Latin American countries lack sufficient formal recycling facilities, resulting in costly transoceanic exports of hazardous waste and hampering recycling efforts. Brazil, with its technical capacity, plays a key role in the region. This event, titled "Multisectoral National Dialogue on the Informal Management of ULABs in Mercosur," brings together various sectors to address the environmental and health challenges and the consequences posed by informal ULAB handling. Supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection of Germany.

Start date

End date

Brief description of event

Brief description of event
Lead chromates are pigments used in the production of lead paints which are sources of lead poisoning in children and pregnant women. Many reports including WHO’s have shown that it can cause multiple organ damage and it is still in use in many countries despite its ban in wealthy countries like EU and the US. In 2018, Ethiopia passed a regulation to control the production, import and export of leaded paints with lead content above 90 ppm. This campaign is therefor to promote for lead chromates – which are sources of lead poisoning to be listed under the Rotterdam convention.

Improving Lead Paint Action

Brief description of event
A year ago, a technical regulation governing lead paint came into force in Georgia. This new regulation on lead in paint imposes new obligations on manufacturers, distributors and sellers. Regulatory changes are an important but not final step towards eliminating lead paint. Implementation, enforcement and control are needed to ensure meaningful progress. Awareness Campaign on Lead Poisoning Prevention during the International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2024. Focus: Bright Futures Start Lead Free

Start date

End date
26.10.2024

Brief description of event
The Twelfth International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (ILPPW), taking place October 20-26, 2024, is a major opportunity to raise awareness about the adverse health effects of lead exposure, particularly in children, adults, pregnant women, lactating women, and developing fetuses. Though little known to the general public in Haiti, lead exposure, primarily from lead-based paints, the air, soil, dust, drinking water, food, and various consumer products, remains a significant public health issue, especially in low-income and highly vulnerable countries. This year, Institut Panos will make the most of this week by addressing this issue through a short communication campaign to raise awareness among the public, particularly parents of young children and pregnant women, and mobilize healthcare professionals on dangers posed by lead found in different products. This campaign aims to 1) raise awareness about the sources of environmental lead contamination and exposure in Haiti and the dangers of lead exposure in Haiti, particularly among children, young adults, and pregnant women, and 2) encourage paying attention to lead’s danger from household paints, discarded batteries and polluted ground water and advocate for safer practices.

But also, community consultations will be carried out with media coverage to further shed light on the issue of lead and its implications on health, mainly on children. In addition, LHAP will work on organizing a meeting with the paint industry to assess and evaluate the status of using alternatives after the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) project which has worked with industry on alternatives. The two meetings of the two secretaries and with the industry is to facilitate the issuing of a national legislation. LHAP will also continue working as well with the Ministry of Environment to support the countries delivering a notification regarding lead chromate listing in Annex III of Rotterdam Convention, something that has started almost a year ago and will continue during this campaign.

Multisectoral National Dialogue on the Informal Management of ULABs in Paraguay: Addressing Lead Contamination

Start date
21.10.2024

End date
22.10.2024

Brief description of event
GAHP's Mercosur project aims to mitigate lead pollution by addressing informal management of used lead-acid batteries (ULABs). The project aligns with GAHP's mission to reduce health risks caused by toxic pollution. While the Basel Convention regulates hazardous waste management, the LAC region's ban on transboundary movement has overlooked the potential for circular economy solutions. Many Latin American countries lack formal recycling facilities, leading to the costly export of hazardous waste, impacting recycling efforts. This two-day event titled "Multisectoral National Dialogue on the Informal Management of ULABs in Paraguay" brings together various sectors to address the environmental and health challenges posed by informal ULAB handling. With the support from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection of Germany.

Plaidoyer en vue de la mise en place d'une réglementation interdisant le plomb dans les peintures

Brief description of event
Lead poisoning causes pathologies that affect the health, particularly of children, pregnant women and seniors. It occurs mainly through the nose and mouth and every centimeter of our environment can be a source of contamination. At home, paint is on the walls, on our plates or even on the children's toys. In Senegal, we don't seem to worry too much about the harmful effects of lead in paint. To date, no regulations exist. If according to certain sources, a decree was in preparation after the tragedies of Ngagne Diaw, this would no longer be the case. This activity will attempt to work with media but also with children to lead an advocacy campaign for a ban on lead in paints.

Implementation of making voluntary standard ZS1185 mandatory in support of elimination of Lead Paint Project

Start date
27.09.2024

End date
15.11.2024

Brief description of event
The Global Alliance to eliminate lead paint target is for all countries to have legally binding controls on lead in paint by 2020. Target was supported by Governments including Zambia at ICCM /4 conference in December 2015. Lead paint is still widely available and is still sold in Africa and Zambia in particular as per IPEN report. Studies of paint usedin homes in Zambia (39 samples) found that 64% of samples contained lead greater than 90ppm and the highest concentration measured was 120 000ppm. In Zambia, stakeholder workshop was held from 17th to23 December 2022 to obtain input for a draft law to reduce lead in paint and to make an existing lead paint standard mandatory. In 2023,outreach to policy makers and implementers was conducted to support drafting of legislation eliminating lead in paint and also to make existing standard ZS 1185 Mandatory. Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry has given a go ahead.
