Step in and take a stand for a healthy future

The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2024 is protecting young people from tobacco industry interference. WHO’s social media communication campaign is following a “for youth, by youth strategy” where young people will be leading the charge in calling out the tobacco industry for its manipulative and deceptive tactics, and revealing the true and devastating impact that the industry has on health, social justice, and the environment. It’s time to take a stand for our human right to a healthy future.
The tobacco industry influences and interfere with young people, spending around 8 billion dollars a year on various forms of advertising. Let’s put a stop to this by showing the power of unity… the power of stepping in.
How many steps around the world can we accumulate against the tobacco industry?
What is the event?
An organized, fixed distance walk taking place in multiple cities around the world. The event is an opportunity to invite young people in your city to lead the charge against the tobacco industry and shed light on its deceptive and manipulative tactics. Promotional materials for these events can be customised by participating cities and offer them the chance to express their culture as they participate.
Why a walk?
In line with the idea of young people stepping in, a walk is a great way to encourage mobilization around the message. The average person will take between 6000 and 7500 steps on a 5km walk. How many steps can we accumulate in total? This number will be a metaphorical representation of how much power we have when we are united.

Leave your mark / (footprint)
A giant outline of an anti-tobacco visual can be set-up at an appropriate venue (outside the offices of policy makers or even in a school or university). People would be encouraged to stand on an ink pad and stamp their footprint, turning the outlined image into a solid image in support of the stand against Big Tobacco.
