Alcohol-attributable deaths or alcohol-attributable disability adjusted life years (DALYs) lost denotes the number of a deaths or DALYs lost caused by alcohol (i.e. number of deaths or DALYs which would disappear if alcohol consumption was removed). Alcohol consumption has a causal impact on more than 200 health conditions (diseases and injuries).
Method of estimation:
Alcohol-attributable deaths or alcohol-attributable DALYs lost are calculated based on multiplying alcohol-attributable fractions by the corresponding total number of deaths or DALYs lost. For each disease the exact number of alcohol-attributable deaths or DALYs lost are different and will depend on the alcohol-attributable fraction (which is based on the level and patterns of alcohol consumption, and on the relative risks) and the total number of deaths or DALYs lost.
