Diarrhoeal diseases from inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene, attributable fraction
Short name:
MBD WSH
Topic:
Risk factors
Burden of disease
Rationale:
As part of a broader project to assess major risk factors to health, the burden of disease resulting from exposure to unsafe drinking-water, sanitation and hygiene was assessed. Access to safely managed drinking-water and safely managed sanitation services are Sustainable Development Indicators for Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. In low-income countries, inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene are important risks to health.
Definition:
The contribution of a risk factor to a disease or a death is quantified using the population attributable fraction (PAF). The PAF is the proportional reduction in population disease or mortality that would occur if exposure to a risk factor were reduced to an alternative ideal exposure scenario. Many diseases are caused by multiple risk factors, and individual risk factors may interact in their impact on overall risk of disease. As a result, PAFs for individual risk factors often overlap and add up to more than 100 percent.
Disaggregation:
None
Method of estimation:
The PAF is estimated by combining the proportion of people at specific exposure levels with the relative risks for each exposure level: PAF = Σ Pi RRi - Σ Pi' RRi Σ Pi RRi.
Where: PAF = Population attributable fraction.
Pi = Proportion of the population in exposure category i.
Pi’ = Proportion of the population in the alternative exposure category i.
RRi = Relative risk at exposure category i compared with the reference level.
Method of estimation of global and regional aggregates:
Population-weighted aggregates, by region, or global.
Preferred data sources:
Civil registration with complete coverage and medical certification of cause of death
Attributable fraction of diarrhoea to inadequate sanitation
