Government research investment is needed not only to find a cure for dementia, but also in other areas such as prevention, risk reduction, diagnosis, treatment and care - including the disciplines of social science, public health and implementation research. Increasing the investment in research is an integral component of the national response to dementia. It is important to allocate budgets to support collaborative national and international research to promote sharing of and open access to research data, to generate knowledge on how to translate what is already known about dementia into action, and to support the retention of the research workforce.
